Chinese Activities and Their Impacts on African Countries’ Peace & Security: New Research from Africa

This event took place on October 21st, 2022 and was hosted online via Zoom webinar.

Early career African scholars, supported by a new USIP program, shared their work on wildlife trafficking in Cameroon, infrastructure projects in Ethiopia and Uganda, and mining activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This event was sponsored by Georgetown University’s Initiative for U.S.-China Dialogue on Global Issues and Africa-China Initiative with the United States Institute for Peace.

Alexia Tata is an Early Career Researcher at the United States Institute for Peace focusing on China-Africa economic engagement and peace and security analysis. She presented on wildlife trafficking in Cameroon.

Hubert Kinkoh is a Researcher in the African Peace and Security Governance Programme at the Institute for Security Studies. He presented on infrastructure projects in Ethiopia.

Joshua Mugumbwa is the Dean of the Faculty of Leadership and Management at Makerere University Business School (MUBS), Kumpala, Uganda. He holds a PhD in Public Policy from Makerere University and has a diverse education background, including Master’s Degrees in Governance and Development, Management, and postgraduate diplomas in Education and Management. He co-presented on infrastructure projects in Uganda with Judith Nakirija.

Judith Nakirija is a PhD candidate and lecturer at the Makerere University Business School (MUBS). She holds a Master of Business Administration from MUBS. She co-presented on infrastructure projects in Uganda with Joshua Mugumbwa.

Arnold Nciko is an Early Career Researcher for the United States Institute for Peace focusing on the interplay of Chinese involvement in the DRC mining sector and the mitigation of the climate impact of their activities.

Linda Benabdallah (discussant) is an Associate Professor for the Politics & International Affairs Department at Wake Forest University.

Henry Tugendhat (moderator) is an economist with the China team at the U.S. Institute of Peace. He focuses on issues related to China’s impact on conflict dynamics in Africa and Latin America.
