Our Mission

The Georgetown Africa-China Initiative has the overall aim of promoting multifaceted, evidence-based research and dialogue on African and Chinese perceptions and engagement with one another. At present, much of the popular media presentation focuses on “China-in-Africa” relations, foregrounding American and European interests across Africa alongside analysis of China’s intentions and activities across Africa. ACI research, events, and activities aim to offer a critical, evidence-driven approach to these relationships that places the diverse, contested, and strategic views of African governments, businesses, and citizens, as well as diverse Chinese perspectives, with analysis grounded in empirical research and real-life experiences. ACI researchers aim to produce and disseminate research that examines both historical engagements and contemporary relationships and strategic interests, focusing on the complexities and nuances to highlight possibilities and potential spaces for creative engagements.
